Hours: Monday - Friday 7:00am - 4:00 pm

The Durham Emergency Communications Center works to provide City and County residents the fastest, most-efficient emergency call response possible while ensuring the safety of our police, fire and emergency medical services responders. Our state-of-the art center was the first, and currently one of only three, in the nation to hold both emergency medical dispatch accreditation from the Commission for Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies and Project 33 agency training program certification from APCO International. Devoted to providing technical support, administration, and maintenance of a department’s technology systems and equipment, including user support, data management and data extraction/analysis. Provide complex and advanced paraprofessional technology support work.

Responsible for coordinating transactions and processes at the highest level of standard operating tasks, including providing direction to lower level staff in the execution of operational tasks and review and verification of work. Provide data, systems, and hardware/software support for a department’s systems.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Provides data, systems, hardware, and/or software support for a City department; work involves managing specialized databases and systems including creating, maintaining, and updating scripts, creating maps and maintaining map layers, and digitizing, extracting, editing, and updating data; installs software patches and upgrades; tests and troubleshoots system, server, database, and/or equipment issues; processes calls; and responds to data and/or user requests. 
  • Prepares, maintains, reviews, and/or submits technical, project, and other reports, records, user guides, and other documents; reviews contracts, agreements, permits, engineering drawings and plans; updates and maintains databases and online systems; compiles queries, and reconciles data; reviews work for accuracy, completeness and compliance with specifications, requirements, regulations, policies, and procedures. 
  • Coordinates with City departments, and/or external agencies; provides technical assistance at formal meetings; assists with planning and process improvements; and may conduct training, as assigned. 
  • Responsible for the daily operation of the City of Durham 800 MHz P25 Trunked Radio System and other assigned electronic systems which facilitate public safety and local government communications. 
  • Provide troubleshooting, repair, and preventative maintenance of software and hardware including system controller servers, routers, switches, transmitters, receivers, channel banks, and microwave equipment. 
  • Coordinate with vendors regarding system upgrades and maintenance contracts. Perform inspections to ensure compliance with Federal Communications Commission, Federal Aviation Administration, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations. 
  • Provide emergency on-call radio service on a rotating schedule for after-hours support.

Minimum Qualifications & Experience

  • Associate’s degree or equivalent in computer science, information technology, or directly related field,
  • Three years of related technology support experience

Additional Preferred Skills

  • General Radio Operators License is preferred.
  • Prior Information Technology (IT) experience preferred
  • Experience with an 800 MHz radios system preferred
