Mechanic

Responsible for repairing and overhauling of a variety of construction and maintenance equipment with special emphasis on diesel powered and complex public works equipment.

1. Performs preventive maintenance on a wide variety of equipment, including small engine, cars/light trucks, heavy equipment, hydraulic equipment, fire/rescue equipment, and other specialized equipment in order to identify potential operating problems.
2. Disassemble units and inspect parts for wear, using micrometers, calipers, and gauges.
3. Overhaul or replace carburetors, blowers, generators, distributors, starters, and pumps.
4. Install and repair accessories such as radios, heaters, mirrors, and windshield wipers.
5. Examine vehicles to determine extent of damage or malfunctions.
6. Repairs damaged automobile bodies.
7. Repair manual and automatic transmissions.
8. Repair or replace parts such as pistons, rods, gears, valves, and bearings.
9. Repair, reline, replace and adjust brakes.
10. Rewire ignition systems, lights, and instruments panels.
11. Tear down, repair, and rebuild faulty assemblies such as power systems, steering systems, and linkages.
12. Test and adjust repaired systems to meet manufacturers' performance specifications.
13. Test drive vehicles, and test components and systems, using equipment such as infrared engine analyzers, compression gauges, and computerized diagnostic devices.
14. Follow checklists to ensure all important parts are examined, including belts, hoses, steering systems, spark plugs, brake and fuel systems, wheel bearings, and other potentially troublesome areas.
15. Review work order and discuss with mechanic crew leader.
16. Maintains shop area and related equipment in order to ensure a safe working environment, ensure equipment operates properly/safely and identify equipment not operating properly/safely.
17. Prepares and completes various forms, reports, performance appraisals, accident reports and daily activity.
18. Reports accidents, injuries and other incidents.
19. Responds to emergencies as required and may be required to work additional days and hours as needed.
20. Performs all other duties as assigned.
21. Available for work before, during, and after natural disasters for service to the public.
22. Required to provide own tools to adequately perform the above listed functions.

• Knowledge of construction, assembly, adjustment, and maintenance of a variety of automotive and heavy equipment.
• Knowledge of the components, parts, operating principles and maintenance needs of equipment.
• Knowledge of the methods and practices used in the repair and renovation of automotive and heavy equipment.
• Knowledge of machines and tools, including their design, uses, repair and maintenance.
• Considerable knowledge of the instruments employed in the testing and operation and repair of automotive heavy equipment.
• Ability to determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job.
• Ability to watch gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly.
• Ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. lt does not involve solving the problem, only recognizing there is a problem.
• Ability to detect or tell the difference between sounds that may vary in pitch and loudness.
• Ability to prepare accurate reports.
• Skilled in the use of automotive shop equipment.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to perform physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.
• Ability to lift and carry more than 45 pounds for extended periods of time.
• Ability to communicate orally. 

High school graduate or possession of an acceptable equivalent diploma; three (3) years of relevant mechanical experience; or an equivalent combination of training, education and experience.

Special Qualifications:

Possession of a valid Florida Commercial Driver's License, Class "A" with air brakes, an acceptable driving record is required. Will accept preparation of a CDL permit with the ability to obtain a CDL in 90 days. (Certain endorsements may be required such as H, N, or X.) Preferred: ISMA Work Zone Safety Certificate, National Incident Management System (NMIS) 700 Supervisory training course.
