Are you someone who enjoys working outdoors, has a keen eye for detail, and takes pride in ensuring community resources are well-maintained?  If so, we have the perfect opportunity for you!  As a Meter Reader with Helix Water District, you will play a crucial role in maintaining the accuracy and reliability of our water services.  You will follow a prescribed routine to read and record water meter readings, report or service defects, and perform essential maintenance and minor repairs.

Salary:

  • Meter Reader I: $28.80 - $36.76/hourly
  • Meter Reader II: $33.34 - $42.55/hourly
  • Annual Merit Increases:  Full-time employees are eligible for 5% merit increases on an annual basis until they reach the top of their pay range.

Benefits Package:

  • 100% employee premiums paid for all health benefits

  • Deferred Compensation:  Up to $3,500 matching on 457 plan
  • 24 annual days of accrued leave (Increases to 29 after 5 years of service, max 37 annual days of accrued leave)

  • Education Reimbursement:  Up to $4,000 annually

Overview of Responsibilities

As a Meter Reader I/II, you will read and record residential, commercial, industrial, and automated meter readings on assigned routes, ensuring accuracy within historic consumption limits. You will observe and report any damaged or inoperative meters and services, perform minor repairs, and maintain meter boxes. Additionally, you will interact with customers to address questions and concerns about leaks or service issues, referring them to the appropriate department when necessary. Your role also includes maintaining and updating electronic records and handheld devices used for meter reading and communication.

Qualifications

Qualified candidates for the Meter Reader I/II position will have education experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school or possession of a GED; a minimum of one year of experience involving public contact and a valid Class C California driver’s license and ability to maintain insurability under the district’s vehicle insurance policy.
