The Attorney General’s Office is recruiting for a permanent full time Paralegal 2 in the Solicitor General’s Office. This position is located in Olympia, Washington, and is represented by the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE).

Paralegal 2 (Range 55) salary range: $61,644 - $82,872 (Effective 7/1/2025)
The base pay offered will take into account internal equity and may vary depending on the preferred candidate’s job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

About the Solicitor General’s Office:

The Solicitor General’s Office (SGO) is comprised of 11 attorneys and 6 professional staff. The SGO coordinates the involvement of the Attorney General’s Office in cases before the United States Supreme Court, assists the AGO in preparing and presenting appellate cases in state and federal courts, directly handles select appeals, and coordinates the AGO’s involvement with amicus curiae “Friend of the Court” briefs. The SGO also is responsible for preparing and issuing Attorney General Opinions to officials statutorily authorized to request them, working in conjunction with the Attorney General Opinions Committee to accomplish this responsibility.

The SGO carries out the Attorney General’s duties to prepare ballot titles and explanatory statements for ballot measures and represents the state in litigation involving the powers of initiative and referendum. The Solicitor General’s Office serves as counsel to the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Legislature, Secretary of State, and Judicial Clients (Administrative Office of the Courts, Office of Public Defense, and Office of Civil Legal Aid). The Solicitor General serves as the Chair of the AGO Ethics Committee, and the SGO plays a role in coordinating legal advice on issues of statewide significance.

Duties and Essential Functions of a Paralegal 2: 

• Provides technical paralegal support to Deputy Solicitors General in litigation and appeals in state and federal courts at all levels and jurisdictions.
• Provides administrative support for cases and SGO programs.
• Assumes responsibility of SGO’s primary Public Records Coordinator, Constituent Correspondent Liaison, and Critical Events Reader.

Qualifications:

Combination of four years of experience* through:

• Paralegal certification
• Two-year paralegal degree
• Paralegal plus (or nine-month paralegal, post BA) certification,

and/or

• Paraprofessional experience in support of an attorney

OR

• Three years’ experience as a Paralegal 1 in Washington State Service.

Examples of paraprofessional experience in support of an attorney:

• Preparing legal pleadings and legal correspondence
• Ensuring and verifying timely and proper service of legal documents
• Calculating, verifying, and calendaring critical events and other dates
• Managing case documents, files and exhibits
• Tracking and organizing discovery documents
• Researching legal issues and verifying legal citations and references for accuracy

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Previous experience working on cases before Thurston County Superior Court, Washington State Supreme Court, U.S. District Court for Western District of Washington, and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
• Thorough knowledge of state and federal rules and citation format, including Bluebook Rules.
• Previous experience working in civil litigation and appeals.
• Previous experience working in state government or through knowledge of workings of state government.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Verification of employment history, professional references, education (e.g., degree, license, or official transcript) may be conducted.

Incumbent may also be required to submit to and pass a criminal background check at any time during the period of employment if, in the scope of their employment and assigned duties, they are identified as a witness by an AAG prosecuting a criminal case.
