About this Opportunity

Brunswick County is looking for a Chief Utility Plant Operator to join our Public Utilities Department and oversee operations at the Ocean Isle Beach Wastewater Treatment Plant, located in Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina at 6049 Yarbrough St. SW.  The Chief Utility Plant Operator performs operation and minor maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant equipment and related appurtenances.  Work also includes:

  • Inspecting and monitoring wastewater treatment plant equipment and machinery to ensure properly treated effluent is discharged in accordance with permit limits
  • Maintaining quality records for both meeting permit limits and effective long term equipment operations and historical data recovery
  • Controlling mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic, pumping systems and chemical feed systems associated with the treatment process
  • Supervising operators and ensuring they receive proper training on safety, operations, procedures, and general housekeeping demands of the facility operated
  • Conducting and/or requesting routine laboratory analysis to determine effectiveness of treatment process and record results accordingly.
  • Planning, compiling quotes, and assisting in the preparation of the annual budget for the facility

The Chief Utility Plant Operator must exercise initiative and independent judgment in completing assignments.  The Chief Utility Plant Operator will also be required to sign as Operator in Responsible Charge (ORC) of the facility.  Reports to the Wastewater Treatment Plant Superintendent.  If you are an experienced wastewater treatment operator ready to take the next step in your career, we’d love to hear from you!

Education and Experience

Vocational/Technical school diploma and three (3) to five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in wastewater treatment plant operation; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.

  • Must possess a valid North Carolina Driver’s License.   
  • Must possess a North Carolina Grade IV Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certification or must obtain within a specified timeframe.
  • Must possess a North Carolina Spray Irrigation Operator Certification or must obtain within a specified timeframe.

Physical Requirements
Must be physically able to operate a variety of wastewater plant machinery and office equipment including various wastewater pumps, chlorinators, mixers, computers, two-way radios, etc.  Must also be physically able to operate a motor vehicle.  Must be able to exert up to 110 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 5 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.  Must be able to walk, stand, stoop, bend, climb, and reach.
