Position Summary

Under the direction of the Coordinator of Instructional Design & Technology, the Instructional Designer & Technologist (IDT) will provide instructional design and technology support for all campuses and will assist with all IDT training, support, and professional development. The IDT staff will develop instructional materials and products and assist in the technology-based redesign of courses. The IDT staff will assist faculty and staff in learning about, becoming proficient in, and applying instructional technology.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Instructional Designer & Technologist’s primary responsibility is serving as an education professional whose job is to assist with identifying the performance, skills, knowledge, information and attitude gaps of a targeted audience and help create and deliver learning experiences to fill this gap. This position will be based on the Bay Minette campus but travel will be required to other Coastal Alabama campuses, as needed.


At a minimum, the essential functions of this position shall include:

 

  1. Develop instructional or training roadmaps for online and hybrid courses and programs.
  2. Create engaging learning activities and compelling course content.
  3. Adapt instructional content or delivery methods for different levels or types of learners.
  4. Visualize instructional graphics, the user interface, and the finished product.
  5. Analyze and apply trends and best practices in learning technologies and instructional design.
  6. Design instructional aids for stand-alone or instructor-led classroom or online use.
  7. Maintain project documentation and electronic course development documentation.
  8. Support students, faculty, and staff via phone, email, and in person with instructional design and technology questions and issues.
  9. Use assistive technology and create instructional content that meets WCAG standards.
  10. Assist instructors and the Distance Education Department in developing ADA compliant course and training materials; monitor online course content for ADA compliance; troubleshoot issues with software and instructional materials as needed. 
  11. Assist instructors with developing and documenting course activities and substantive interactions for DOE and SACSCOC requirements.
  12. Assist the Coordinator of Instructional Design and Technology with conducting professional development sessions in collaboration with the Professional Development Team, covering technologies such as Coastal Alabama’s learning management system (Canvas), Respondus Products, Honorlock, TurnItIn.com, Tutor.com, Microsoft Office 365, live conferencing tools (Skype for Business, BigBlueButton and Microsoft Teams), Bridge (professional development system for employees) and other educational technologies.
  13. Conduct training sessions through group and one-on-one sessions with live conferencing tools, such as: Skype for Business, BigBlueButton and Microsoft Teams.
  14. Travel to multiple campus locations to meet in person with faculty and staff for various training and professional development sessions.
  15. Assist with hybrid and online Master Template workshops and Master Template course design and maintenance.
  16. Represent the Distance Education Department on committees and in general to the campus community; participate in professional associations and seminars, as appropriate.
  17. Maintain a highly professional attitude and demeanor at all times. 
  18. Exhibit appropriate and satisfactory leadership with the College.
  19. Comply with ACCS and College policies, as well as state and federal laws.
  20. Provide responsible, adequate, and satisfactory leadership on campus and within the College.

Qualifications

EVALUATION OF PERFORMANCE

The job performance of the Instructional Designer & Technologist will be evaluated, at a minimum, annually, by the Director of Distance Education in accordance with the College and Alabama Community College System policies.  


Required Qualifications

  1. Bachelor's degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, or related field from a regionally accredited institution. 
  2. Five years of related experience.
  3. Demonstrated experience with instructional design models. Samples of demonstrated experience are required to be included with the application packet.
  4. Demonstrated experience writing effective copy, instructional text, and/or video scripts. Samples of demonstrated experience are required to be included with the application packet.
  5. Demonstrated experience conducting professional development workshops. Samples of demonstrated experience are required to be included with the application packet. 

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Master’s degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, or related field from a regionally accredited institution.
  2. Experience creating and designing courses in a learning management system, specifically Canvas.
  3. Experience working in a community college setting.
