Description

Performs skilled work in the operation of a wastewater treatment plant during a permanent or rotating shift.  Responsible for the efficient operation of a treatment plant and routine adjustments to equipment and machinery operating controls. Requires independent judgment in adjusting machinery, equipment and related control apparatus in accordance with established procedures and standards. Also, it includes grounds and building maintenance.  Signs state regulatory reports and confirms safe operating conditions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Performs work activities associated with the treatment plant(s) assigned. Provides technical support and guidance for co-workers.  Ensures safe, effective operation of plant facilities. 

Conducts frequent and periodic inspections of plant to detect malfunctions and initiates corrective actions.

Ensures maintenance of accurate and complete records on plant operation.

Participates in new worker orientation; provides training and instruction to subordinates.

Execute work and maintenance schedules, ensures that building, grounds and equipment are maintained in proper condition.

Assists in formulating and implementing practice rules, techniques and procedures.

Ensures safe use of all chemicals and mechanical treatment related supplies. 

Reads and records daily plant parameters and equipment readings. Makes adjustments to the equipment. 

Oversees interior and exterior building maintenance and housekeeping chores and grounds maintenance tasks. 

Performs or coordinates preventative, actual and emergency maintenance on all electrical and mechanical plant systems.

Prepares monthly reports for Public Works Department. 

Prepares monthly, quarterly, and yearly reports for the Department of Environmental Protection.

Requires shift work, holiday work, weekend work, and on-call duties when needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of wastewater treatment plant operations, policies, procedures and methods. 
  • Knowledge of math and chemistry. 
  • Basic knowledge of field service repairs, repair parts, lift station operations, knowledge of tools and equipment, and some maintenance.
  • General computer operating skills (typing correspondence, email, and memorandums).
  • Works well with others, communicates well with office workers and customers to assist in all phases of utilities operations.
  • Use of hand tools, some mechanical skills, operating equipment, meter reading, grounds maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts including weekend duty, emergency call outs. 
  • Ability to make and maintain records and reports accurately. 
  • Good mechanical skills. 

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) equivalency.
  • At least three (3) years or more experience in the operation of a wastewater treatment plant.

       LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS;


  • Valid Florida Driver’s License.
  • Minimum of Class “B” Operator Certificate (Wastewater) as issued by the State of Florida.
  • Preferred Dual Certification of Class “B” Wastewater and Class “C” Water.
